Jenny Baerveldt is our Head of Human Resources who has been with CLIQ for more than ten years. From recruiting the right candidates to maintaining a great company culture, she and her team are responsible for HR at CLIQ’s offices in London, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Toronto and Düsseldorf. Her career and educational background showcase her dedicated and determined nature. To get to where she is today, Jenny pursued a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management next to her full-time job as a consultant. While these years were tough and required a lot of strength of mind, she sees it as the basis of her current career, leading the HR team at CLIQ.
With her warm and driven personality, she continues to succeed in setting the tone for our company culture. To give you an insight into who Jenny is and what she does at CLIQ, we sat down with her to ask her a few questions.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BECOME WHEN YOU WERE A KID?
A hairdresser. I actually tried that for a few months when I was 16. Let’s say I wasn’t talented.
WHAT IS THE CLIQ CULTURE ABOUT FOR YOU?
Diversity is the first thing that comes to mind. I have never worked for a company with so many different people that are able to work so well together and feel included. I am very proud that we have an environment where people can be safe and feel welcome.
HOW DO YOU AND YOUR TEAM ENSURE THAT THE CLIQ CULTURE PERSISTS?
Many people have a degree and/or work experience in HR, but to be able to succeed in my team and at CLIQ, interpersonal skills are super important. Integrity, being kind, teamwork, responsibility and having an open and curious personality are imperative. Stick to what you promise, try to live without bias, ask questions, be honest and laugh lots!
HOW DO YOU ENSURE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THE COMPANY?
By making sure we employ and keep people with different backgrounds, experiences and hobbies even. However, being diverse does not automatically mean that there is inclusion. We need to be considerate of someone’s qualities and background and make sure your co-workers are considerate of that, too.
So, to ensure that our employees feel included and not left out, we like to approach them as individuals and not treat everybody exactly the same way. This is to say that different kinds of people require different approaches. Of course, everybody deserves to be treated nicely and with the same respect, but when approaching people, you need to be considerate of their background and culture.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO APPLY AT CLIQ?
Do it! We are always looking for talented individuals and we welcome candidates that send open applications, too.
HOW DID RECRUITMENT CHANGE FOR YOU OVER THE PAST YEARS?
The market is very tight; there is a high demand for almost all kinds of professionals. We have to be more proactive in our recruitment efforts and position ourselves even more as an attractive employer. It’s not only about salary and a nice compensation package; people are looking for different kinds of benefits such as flexibility, room for personal development, diversity, inclusion and purpose.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AND PRIVATE LIFE?
I love to work hard but I’m very good at being able to relax and enjoy myself, even after a long work week. Having chosen a life without kids, there is enough time left to have fun, relax, exercise, go to concerts, work in my garden, go on vacation and sometimes even do absolutely nothing. Most importantly: to be able to have a good balance in your life you need to make conscious decisions and be honest with yourself, then the rest will follow.
FROM AN HR PERSPECTIVE, WHERE DO YOU SEE CLIQ IN 5 YEARS?
I see CLIQ becoming a strong brand, a company with cool entertaining products and a meaning. I envision growth and becoming even more mature, an employer of choice!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF REGARDING CLIQ?
How we continue to reinvent ourselves and how successful we are. There is so much perseverance; we just won’t let go until we succeed (and can also acknowledge when we don’t) and are always looking to improve ourselves. How we work together, how we’ve grown together and how we continue to provide a workplace where people are visible, able to learn and have fun.
WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE CONTENT ON CLIQ AT THE MOMENT?
Films, series and just discovering audiobooks! Personally, I’m a horror film fan, CLIQ also has a big offer for this kind of genre. So, if you’re brave enough, check it out!
