Years of experience in the workplace can offer invaluable lessons that guide professional growth and success. Our Head of Business Control & Analysis at CLIQ, Arnoud Sulkers, who brings over 13 years of dedicated work, shares three key lessons from his career journey.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of simplicity in communication. Early in my career, I often found myself diving deep into technical details and complex analyses. While thoroughness is important, I soon realised that overwhelming my audience with jargon and intricate data often led to confusion rather than clarity.
I could engage my audience more effectively by focusing on the essentials and reporting my message in clear, actionable points. Whether presenting to colleagues or stakeholders, simplicity became my guiding principle. The clearer the message, the greater the understanding and impact.
Another crucial lesson is the power of feedback. Initially, I viewed feedback as criticism, often taking it personally. However, I came to understand that feedback is a gift—an opportunity for growth. By seeking input from peers and mentors, I gained new perspectives that enriched my work.
Embracing feedback has encouraged me to be more open-minded and adaptable. It’s allowed me to refine my ideas and improve my performance continuously. I now actively solicit feedback on my projects, seeing it as a collaborative effort rather than a judgment. This mindset has created a culture of open communication in my team, enhancing our collective success.
Lastly, I’ve learned the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In the early stages of my career, I often sacrificed personal time for professional commitments. While dedication is admirable, I discovered that neglecting my well-being led to less energy and diminished productivity.
Prioritising work-life balance has improved my overall happiness and enhanced my performance at work. I’ve learned to set boundaries, schedule regular breaks, and make time for activities that recharge me. This balance ensures creativity and resilience, enabling me to approach challenges with renewed energy.
These lessons have profoundly influenced my professional growth at CLIQ. Each one serves as a reminder that success isn’t just about skills or knowledge; it’s also about effective communication, openness to growth, and nurturing well-being. As I continue on my journey, I’m committed to applying these insights to create a more meaningful and impactful work experience.
